Self-Care
Self-Care Isn't Always What We Think It Is
If we were sitting around a table together with a cup of coffee, talking about self-care, I think we’d discover pretty quickly that it doesn’t look the same for everyone.
For some of us, self-care might be a quiet morning. For someone else, it might be getting outside, reading a good book, spending time with people we love, or simply giving ourselves permission to slow down.
And as we move through different seasons of life, what we need can change, too.
I think that’s something worth remembering.
Maybe Self-Care Starts With a Few Positive Words
Sometimes the way we begin our morning can influence how we move through the rest of the day.
A positive message, an encouraging thought, an inspiring quote, or a few simple words that remind us that we’re capable of getting through whatever is ahead can give us a different perspective before the day even begins.
Sometimes I like to start the day by being open to whatever message or bit of wisdom I may need to hear that day.
It might be something that brings encouragement.
It might make me stop and think.
And every once in a while, it feels almost as though the words found me at exactly the right moment.
We don’t always know what we need before the day begins. Sometimes we just need to slow down long enough to listen. Sometimes the quietest messages are the ones we most need to hear.
Maybe It's Journaling
You don’t have to be a writer to put your thoughts on paper.
Write down what you’re grateful for. Write about something that’s bothering you. Write about something you’re looking forward to. Or just write whatever comes to mind.
Sometimes getting our thoughts out of our heads and onto paper gives us a little more room to breathe.
Maybe It's Stillness
We live in a world that rarely stops asking something of us.
Taking five or ten quiet minutes can feel surprisingly difficult—and surprisingly valuable.
Maybe you sit quietly with your coffee. Maybe you pray. Maybe you meditate. Maybe you simply close your eyes and take a few slow breaths.
It doesn’t have to be complicated.
Sometimes quiet is enough.
Maybe It's Being Present
How often do we move through an entire day already thinking about what comes next?
Self-care can be as simple as noticing where you are right now.
The warmth of your coffee.
The sunshine coming through the window.
A beautiful tree outside.
A good conversation.
The sound of music you love.
Those little moments can easily pass us by when we’re rushing through the day. Taking the time to notice them is a small way of coming back to ourselves.
Maybe It's Doing Something Kind
Self-care doesn’t always mean turning inward.
Sometimes doing something kind for someone else can lift our own spirits, too.
Send someone an encouraging message. Check on a friend. Let someone know you’re thinking about them. Do something thoughtful simply because you can.
It doesn’t have to be a grand gesture.
Sometimes the smallest acts of kindness are the ones people remember.
Maybe It's Nourishing Your Spirit
This can look different for everyone.
Maybe it’s reading something inspirational. Maybe it’s spending time in prayer or with Scripture. Maybe it’s reflecting on something that gives your life meaning. Maybe it’s simply sitting quietly and reconnecting with what matters most to you.
We all have different beliefs and different ways of finding that sense of connection.
What matters is making a little room for it.
And Maybe Self-Care Is Simply Asking, "What Do I Need Today?"
I think we sometimes make self-care much more complicated than it needs to be.
It doesn’t have to mean an elaborate routine or finding an hour of uninterrupted time.
Sometimes self-care is resting when you’re tired.
Sometimes it’s saying no.
Sometimes it’s taking a walk.
Sometimes it’s reaching out to someone.
Sometimes it’s starting your morning with a few encouraging words and being open to the message you may need that day.
And sometimes it’s simply giving yourself permission to breathe.
We don’t have to completely change our lives to take better care of ourselves.
Maybe we can start with one small thing.
One quiet moment.
One encouraging thought.
One act of kindness.
One page in a journal.
One deep breath.
And if we were really sitting around that table together, I’d probably ask you:
What is one small thing that helps you feel more like yourself?
Maybe that’s where your self-care begins.
