If you just brought home a Ninja Creami, you’re probably somewhere between “I can’t wait to make ice cream!” and “Okay…what exactly am I supposed to do with this thing?”
I’ve got you.
The Creami is surprisingly easy once you know a few little tricks. And if you’re making high-protein ice cream like I do, there are a few things that can make a BIG difference in the final texture.
A Few Things You’ll Want to Have
Before you start, there are three things I consider especially helpful:
- Ninja Creami NC501 (paid link) — I use the Ninja Creami Deluxe.
- Extra pint containers (paid link)— Trust me on this one. Once you start making Creami recipes, you’ll want several pints in the freezer ready to go.
- A small handheld frother (paid link)— This is one of my favorite little tricks. It helps completely blend protein powder into your liquid base so you don’t end up with clumps.
My Simple High-Protein Formula
You really don’t need a complicated recipe to get started. Think of your Creami base as three simple pieces:
1. Your liquid: Fairlife milk, almond milk, or a ready-to-drink protein shake.
2. Your protein + flavor: Protein powder, Greek yogurt, or both.
3. A little help with texture: A tiny amount of xanthan gum, guar gum, or instant pudding mix can help give your Creami that creamy texture instead of leaving you with something icy or chalky.
The amounts will vary depending on the recipe, but this basic formula gives you a great place to start.
Your First Spin
Here are the things I wish someone had told me before my first batch:
Freeze it completely flat. Your pint needs to freeze for about 24 hours, and you want that surface as level as possible.
Don’t panic after the first spin! Sometimes your beautiful frozen pint comes out looking like dry, crumbly snow. That’s normal. Add a small splash of liquid and use the Re-spin button. It can make a huge difference.
Save your goodies for the Mix-in. Chocolate chips, cookies, nuts, fruit and other add-ins are best added using the Creami’s Mix-in function so they stay little pieces instead of disappearing completely.
Tip: Before hitting the Mix-In button, use a spoon to dig a hole straight down the middle of your ice cream, drop your treats inside, and then place it back into the machine.
And Don't Forget to Clean It!
Your Creami works hard, so give it a good cleaning after every use—especially the lid and blade area.
I put together a step-by-step guide to make this easy:

Once you get the hang of these few basics, the Ninja Creami really is a lot of fun. And there’s something pretty satisfying about opening your freezer and realizing you have homemade, high-protein ice cream waiting for you.
