Monday's Story

Sometimes We Don't Realize How Connected We Are

The other day, a song came on that hadn’t been heard in a long time.

Nothing particularly special about the song.

But within a few seconds, everything changed.

Suddenly, there was a memory.

A place.

A time.

People who hadn’t crossed the mind in quite a while.

And for just a moment, it felt like stepping back into another part of life.

Isn’t it strange how a song can do that?

A photograph can do it too.

So can a familiar smell.

A recipe.

A place you haven’t been in years.

Sometimes the smallest thing opens a door to a memory we didn’t even realize was still there.

And maybe that’s why loneliness can be so tricky.

When we’re feeling alone, it’s easy to notice what’s missing.

The person we’d like to talk to.

The house that feels a little too quiet.

The empty chair.

The phone that isn’t ringing.

But then something unexpected happens.

A song comes on.

An old photograph turns up in a drawer.

A familiar recipe fills the kitchen with a smell from another time.

And suddenly, someone from another chapter of life is right there in our thoughts.

Not physically.

But somehow, they are there.

And for a moment, the room doesn’t feel quite so empty.

Maybe that’s something worth remembering.

A lonely moment is only one moment. It isn’t the whole story.

There have been people.

There have been places.

There have been conversations, celebrations, ordinary afternoons, difficult seasons, and little moments that became memories without us even realizing it at the time.

All of those things are part of our story.

So if one of those lonely days finds you, don’t be so quick to believe the feeling is telling you the whole story.

Maybe pull out that old photograph.

Play that song.

Make the recipe that reminds you of someone.

Call the person you’ve been meaning to call.

Or just sit for a few minutes and remember.

Remember the people who made you laugh.

Remember the places that hold a piece of your story.

Remember the moments you didn’t know would become memories.

Because sometimes the reminder we need isn’t that someone is standing beside us.

Sometimes it’s remembering that we have never made it through this life completely alone.

And that’s a beautiful thing to remember.

There is another Blooming Harbor story that touches on this same idea in a different way: The Path That Was Still There. Sometimes we think we’ve lost our way, or that something we once had is gone, only to discover that the path hasn’t disappeared after all.

Maybe that’s what memories do for us sometimes.

They remind us that the path behind us is still part of the journey.

A Little Thought for Today

Delicate watercolor divider featuring soft pink and white apple blossoms with muted green leaves arranged in a horizontal floral design.

What person, song, photograph, place, or memory has a way of making you feel less alone?

Maybe take a few minutes and think about it.

You might be surprised by what comes to mind.
